Rental Assistance

According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, over 77,000 low income households in Wisconsin received federal rental assistance totaling $422,000. This is money paid to landlords on behalf of tenants and it limits their housing costs to 30 percent of their income. This means that they can better afford all the other things–like food, health care, and clothing. However, for every one household that gets rental assistance, there are two low income households who don’t. They struggle to pay rent–spending more than half their income on housing expenses–and are always at risk of homelessness. Despite this–and the demonstrated impact of stable housing on household stability, health, educational attainment and employment stability–the Trump budget will result in the loss of rental subsidies to over 200,000 families. Truly a loss to Wisconsin families and communities. We should encourage continued support for rental assistance programs.
